In today’s political and social climate, it is all too easy to become entangled in a web of offense and division. With strong opinions on all sides, the spirit of offense has taken root, often leading to discord and strife. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to a higher standard. We must navigate these turbulent times with grace, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to God’s Word.
In recent weeks, I have found this topic particularly challenging, which is why I felt compelled to write about it today. Witnessing what seems like pure hatred directed at others, only because of a difference of opinion, I find myself deeply offended on behalf of God's people. I am angered by those whose words and actions are like daggers, especially when they claim to be Christians but behave contrary to Christ's teachings. I feel a strong urge to defend the Word of God and advocate for treating one another with love and kindness rather than hate and division.
The spirit of offense thrives in environments where misunderstanding, pride, and unforgiveness are prevalent. To overcome it, we must adopt a Christ-like approach that emphasizes love, humility, and forgiveness.
Embrace Humility and Understanding: Philippians 2:3-4 reminds us, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” When we approach conversations with humility, we are more likely to listen and understand rather than react defensively.
Choose Forgiveness: Forgiveness is a powerful antidote to offense. Ephesians 4:32 tells us, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” By forgiving those who offend us, we free ourselves from bitterness and make room for God’s peace.
Pray for a Heart of Compassion: Prayer is essential in cultivating a heart that resists offense. Ask God to fill you with His love and compassion, so you can respond to others with grace. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
Speak the Truth in Love: Ephesians 4:15 encourages us to speak the truth in love, “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” Approach conversations with gentleness and respect, prioritizing the relationship over winning an argument.
Listen Actively: James 1:19 advises, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” By actively listening, we show respect for the other person’s perspective, which can help to de-escalate potential conflicts.
Set Boundaries: There are times when it is best to step back from heated discussions to preserve peace. Proverbs 17:14 wisely states, “Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.” Recognize when it is appropriate to agree to disagree and avoid contentious debates.
As Christians, we must also stand firm in our faith, even when it is unpopular or misunderstood. Ways we can do so without compromising our witness. Some ways I have found to remain steadfast:
Live Out Your Faith; Our actions often speak louder than words. Matthew 5:16 encourages, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Demonstrate Christ’s love through your actions, serving as a living testament to God’s truth.
Be Prepared to Share Your Faith: 1 Peter 3:15-16 exhorts us, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” Share your beliefs confidently, yet respectfully, always pointing back to the hope found in Jesus.
I pray for our nation, our leaders and the hearts of God’s people. He has a plan and it’s all in His timing.
In closing I would like to offer up a prayer for Unity and Wisdom.
Heavenly Father,
In these divided times, we seek Your wisdom and guidance. Help us to overcome the spirit of offense and to navigate our conversations with grace and humility. Fill our hearts with Your love, so we may respond to others with compassion and understanding. Strengthen us to stand firm in Your Word, while always reflecting Christ’s love. Unite us as Your people, that we may be a beacon of hope and peace in a fractured world.
In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
As we continue to navigate these challenging times, let us support one another in kindness and forgiveness. Help others who are being challenged or seek support and prayer if you too are finding it difficult during these times. Together, we can inspire and uplift each other, reflecting the love of Christ in all we do.
May God's peace and love be with you all.
In His Service,
